Monopoly pricing and diffusion of social network goods
نویسنده
چکیده
I present a model of dynamic pricing and diffusion of a network good sold by a monopolist. In the model, the network good is a subscription social network good. This means that in each period, each consumer has to pay a subscription price to use the good, and the utility derived from subscribing to the good increases as more of her neighboring consumers subscribe. Consumers myopically optimize their subscription decisions, and the monopolist chooses a sequence of subscription prices that maximizes his discounted sum of per-period profits. Three main results emerge. First, I characterize a unique steady state of the monopoly market. Second, I find that optimal sequences of subscription prices oscillate around the subscription price at the steady state as time passes. Third, I analyze how changes in the monopolist’s discount factor and the density of the social network affect the subscription price, subscription rate, and deadweight loss at the steady state. Advances in technology enable sellers to price discriminate based upon a customer’s previous purchase decision. E‐tailers can track items already in a shopping cart and item level RFID tags enable retailers to do the same in bricks and mortar stores. As retailers attempt to leverage the information made available from these technologies, it is important to understand how this new visibility imp...
متن کاملPricing in social networks
We analyze the problem of optimal monopoly pricing in social networks in order to characterize the influence of the network topology on the pricing rule. It is shown that this influence depends on the type of providers (local versus global monopoly) and of externalities (consumption versus price). We identify two situations where the monopolist does not discriminate across nodes in the network ...
متن کاملBottleneck Links, Essential Intermediaries, and Competing Paths of Diffusion in Networks
We investigate how information goods are priced and diffused over links in a network. Buyers have idiosyncratic consumption values for information and, after acquiring it, can replicate it and resell copies to uninformed neighbors. A partition of the network captures the effects of network architecture and locations of information sellers on player profits and the structure of competing diffusi...
متن کاملMonopoly Profits in a Competitive Market for Undifferentiated Information Goods via Differentiated Pricing Schemes
It is known that the Bertrand outcome can be avoided when sellers are capacity constrained (Edgeworth 1897); when products are differentiated (d'Aspremont, Gabszewicz, and Thisse 1979); when the model is changed from one of short-run competition to long-run competition (Chamberlin 1929); when consumers are not perfectly informed or if it is costly for them to obtain information (Salop 1977). Ja...

This paper investigates the effects of markup shocks of domestic and export goods prices on macroeconomic variables by using a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model for Iran, in order to examine the effect of the growth of market power and monopoly in domestic and exporting markets from a macroeconomic viewpoint. To this end, the optimal pricing process of domestic, importing and ...
